Money claims only. Same limit for businesses, which can appear through a director, officer or employee. Debts owed to one creditor by the same person cannot be split, and any excess must be waived.

Lawyers: Not required. You generally cannot recover lawyer fees from the other side.

How it works in Nevada

  1. Work out the exact amount and the correct legal name and address of each defendant. Some courts expect a demand letter first.
  2. File an affidavit of complaint in the Justice Court for the right township: where the defendant lives, works or does business, where an injury happened, or where a contract was to be performed.
  3. Pay the fee or apply for a waiver. The court sets a trial date, normally within 90 days.
  4. Serve the defendant at least 14 days before trial and file proof of service. Plaintiffs cannot skip this step.
  5. Bring your evidence and witnesses. The trial is informal and there is no formal discovery.

What it costs

$45 to $175 by claim size under state law. Clark County courts charge $66 to $196 with local additions.

NRS 11.190. These are general limits. The clock can start late, pause or be much shorter, as it is for claims against a government agency.

If you lose

Either side can appeal to district court within 7 calendar days of service of the judgment, with an appeal bond; the district judge reviews for legal error and it is not a new trial.

Small claims rules 88 to 100 of the Justice Court Rules of Civil Procedure were amended effective 29 October 2024. They now say a counterclaim is due within 21 days of service, service at least 14 days before trial, and trial generally within 90 days of filing. No change to the $10,000 limit found in the 2025 compilation of NRS chapter 73 (revised 15 April 2026).
